New to massage? Everything you need to know before your very first session.
Massage therapy is the skilled manipulation of the body's soft tissues using the hands to promote physical and emotional wellbeing. It is one of the oldest forms of therapeutic care in the world, practised across almost every culture for thousands of years, and its benefits are now supported by a growing body of scientific evidence from biomechanics, neurophysiology and clinical research.
The effects begin the moment skilled hands make contact. Massage applies precise mechanical forces — compression, stretch and shear — to muscle and connective tissue, improving tissue extensibility and reducing stiffness. At the same time, it stimulates mechanoreceptors in the skin and muscles that activate the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body from its stress state into genuine rest. This is why cortisol falls, heart rate slows, and serotonin and dopamine rise — not as a vague relaxation response, but as a measurable physiological change.
Massage also works on pain through what is known as the gate control mechanism — non-painful pressure signals effectively compete with and inhibit pain signals at the spinal cord level, which explains why deep tissue work on a chronically sore area can bring lasting relief rather than just temporary comfort. Muscle tone reduces, guarding releases, and the perceived tightness that so many people carry — which is often neurological rather than purely mechanical — begins to ease.
For women especially, regular massage can be genuinely transformative. It eases the physical demands of pregnancy, supports recovery after surgery, relieves the chronic tension that builds from desk work, childcare and the constant demands of daily life, and restores a sense of calm that is hard to find any other way. At Magic Hands, I tailor every session personally to you.

If you are feeling stressed, anxious, constantly tired, or simply running on empty, this is for you. You do not need a special occasion to book a massage. You do not need to have earned it or justified it. You need it because you are human, and the demands placed on women today are extraordinary.
My clients come to me for all sorts of reasons. Some come because their back is in agony. Some come because they cannot sleep. Some come because they have not had a single hour to themselves in months. Some come because their doctor has recommended it after surgery. And some come simply because they want to feel looked after for an hour, by someone who genuinely cares. All of those reasons are valid. All of them are welcome here.
Regular massage is not self-indulgence. It is maintenance. Just as you would not go months without exercising or sleeping properly, your body and mind benefit enormously from regular therapeutic attention. Many of my clients book monthly as part of their routine, and consistently describe it as one of the most important things they do for themselves.
You do not have to be in pain to benefit from massage. Stress, anxiety, poor sleep, low mood, fatigue, tension headaches, tight shoulders from a desk — all of these respond remarkably well to regular treatment. If any of that sounds familiar, a conversation with me costs nothing.
When the world feels like it is sitting on your shoulders, massage works directly on the stress response, lowering cortisol and calming the nervous system within minutes.
The physical act of being cared for, of having someone attend patiently to your body, triggers a profound shift in the nervous system. Many clients describe leaving feeling lighter in a way that is hard to put into words.
Massage is one of the most clinically well-supported tools for improving sleep quality. By reducing cortisol and increasing serotonin, the precursor to melatonin, it resets the conditions your body needs to sleep deeply.
Tension in the neck, shoulders, lower back and hips builds silently over weeks and months. Most clients are surprised at how much they were carrying until I work through it.
Sometimes the best gift you can give someone is an hour entirely for themselves, with no obligations, no errands, no one needing anything from them. A massage with me is exactly that.
Think of the woman in your life who never stops. The friend who has been having a rough time. Your mum, your sister, your partner, your colleague who has been quietly exhausted for months. A one-hour session with Tetiana is a genuinely thoughtful gift, and one they are unlikely to buy for themselves.

You undress to your own comfort level. You are always warmly and professionally draped with clean towels throughout your session, so only the area being worked on is ever uncovered. Your modesty and privacy are respected completely at all times. Many clients undress fully; others prefer to keep underwear on. Both are entirely fine.
It is best to avoid a large meal within two hours of your appointment. A light snack is fine. Lying on a full stomach can cause discomfort, and digestion uses energy your body would otherwise direct toward the benefits of the massage.
Please do not drink alcohol on the day of your appointment. Alcohol impairs the nervous system's response to treatment and reduces its effectiveness. After your session, avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours. Massage releases metabolic waste from muscle tissue, and alcohol interferes with your body's ability to clear it, which can cause headaches and nausea.
Massage should not be painful. Some techniques, particularly deeper work, can create a sensation described as a satisfying pressure — relieving rather than distressing. Tetiana checks in throughout every session and adjusts immediately based on your feedback. You should always feel comfortable speaking up.
In many cases, yes. Having a health condition does not automatically prevent you from receiving massage. Some conditions require adaptation or medical clearance first — such as recent surgery, cancer, or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Tetiana will review your consultation form carefully and discuss any concerns before proceeding. When in doubt she will ask you to obtain clearance from your GP first.
If you have had surgery within the last 12 months, a note from your surgeon or GP confirming that massage is safe is required before your first session. This is a firm safety policy. Tetiana is a specialist in post-surgical lymphatic drainage and can provide significant support to your recovery once clearance is in place.
Yes. If you are seeking massage specifically for a sports injury, please consult your doctor or physiotherapist first. Massage therapy works best alongside, rather than instead of, professional medical or physiotherapy care.
Yes, when carried out by a qualified practitioner. Tetiana holds an Accredited Diploma in Pregnancy, Abdominal and Full Body Massage. Sessions are available from 12 weeks of pregnancy. Massage is not offered in the first trimester or after 36 weeks. High-risk pregnancies require written clearance from your midwife or GP before any treatment.
The temporary circular marks left by cupping are a normal response to the suction and are not bruises. They are caused by increased circulation and typically fade within two to five days. They are not painful. Elite athletes from Olympians to Premier League footballers use cupping regularly as part of their recovery routines.
After your session, stay gently hydrated — a glass of room-temperature water or a cup of herbal tea is ideal. Avoid cold drinks immediately afterwards. Massage stimulates the lymphatic system and supports the body's natural clearing processes, so gentle hydration helps you get the most from your treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for at least 24 hours.
