A VTCT-qualified pregnancy massage practitioner explains how specialist massage changes across your pregnancy journey.
Pregnancy places extraordinary demands on the female body. Between the postural changes caused by a growing bump, the hormonal shifts, the disrupted sleep, and the anxiety that can accompany each trimester, women often find themselves carrying a physical and emotional load that is rarely acknowledged. Specialist pregnancy massage, delivered by a qualified practitioner, can make a meaningful difference at every stage.
I hold an Accredited Diploma in Pregnancy, Abdominal and Full Body Massage at Practitioner level, approved by the CTHA, ABT, FHT and the Federation of Holistic Therapists. Here I explain what pregnancy massage can offer at each stage of your journey.
Pregnancy massage at Magic Hands begins at 12 weeks. The second trimester is typically when most women feel at their most energetic, but the body is already adapting significantly. The centre of gravity is shifting, the lower back is beginning to compensate, and muscles that were never intended to work so hard start to feel the strain.
Effleurage (long, gliding strokes across the back, legs and arms) forms the foundation of a pregnancy massage, promoting circulation, warming the tissue and inducing a state of deep relaxation. Research consistently shows that massage during pregnancy reduces cortisol, the primary stress hormone, and increases serotonin and dopamine. For pregnant women, this means better mood regulation, lower anxiety, and improved sleep quality.
By the third trimester, the physical demands intensify. Lower back pain, sciatica, swollen ankles and legs, rib discomfort, and fatigue are all common. Petrissage techniques, which involve kneading and lifting the soft tissue, can work into the gluteal muscles and lumbar region to release the tension that accumulates from the changed posture of late pregnancy.
Manual lymphatic drainage techniques applied gently to the legs and ankles are particularly effective at reducing the oedema (fluid retention and swelling) that is so common in the third trimester. For many clients, a single session brings hours of relief and noticeably lighter legs.
All sessions from 12 weeks onwards are conducted in a side-lying or semi-reclined position. You are never asked to lie flat on your back or on your front. I use only pregnancy-safe doTERRA essential oils throughout.
The evidence base for massage as a tool for perinatal mental health is growing. Studies have demonstrated reductions in prenatal depression and anxiety following regular pregnancy massage, with improvements in sleep quality and mood that outlast the session itself. For many women, the simple act of having dedicated, unhurried time in which someone attends solely to their wellbeing has a profound effect.
It is equally important to be clear about the boundaries of massage during pregnancy. I do not offer massage after 36 weeks. This is a firm safety policy. Certain pressure points are avoided throughout pregnancy. Any woman with a high-risk pregnancy, placenta praevia, pre-eclampsia, a history of premature labour, or a current DVT will require written clearance from their midwife or GP before any treatment can take place.
Regular sessions, rather than a one-off treatment, produce the most sustained benefits. Many of my pregnancy clients book monthly from 12 weeks, increasing to fortnightly in the third trimester. The consultation form completed at the first visit is updated at subsequent appointments, ensuring treatment always reflects your current health and stage of pregnancy.
